| | When Jake Lien, a ten year old with type 1 diabetes, was running a fever of 105 degrees, his parents knew they needed to take action. Once parents David and Lisa Matthias determined Jake needed to be seen in an emergency room they had a quick decision to make. Located in Readlyn, it takes the same amount of time for the family to drive to either Waverly Health Center or Allen Hospital.
|
If Jake’s condition was severe enough and he needed to be admitted for specialized care, he would need to go to Allen Hospital. However, the family chose Waverly Health Center with the understanding Jake might need to be transferred. After arrival at WHC, Jake received quick medical attention in the emergency department, his condition improved and he was released within a few hours.
They were pleased to receive care from the emergency room physician that night, Dr. Clay Dahlquist. |

“Our decision needed to be quick, but we made the right one. Dr. Dahlquist is a friend and I trust him. The benefit of having him give us Jake’s first assessment meant more to us than anything,” stated David.
David continued, “We were very impressed with Waverly Health Center and the emergency department. The facility improvements and level of care were fantastic. Dr. Dahlquist and his staff did an excellent job of caring for Jake. It’s a great feeling to know and trust your doctor.”
“It’s a blessing to have trusted physicians and a facility like Waverly Health Center nearby when it’s needed,” concluded David.

| | The Benefits of Being Thorough |
| | Experiencing a physician’s thoroughness is something few patients enjoy. But for Christa Leary, it’s something she’ll never forget.
|
At the end of Christa’s exam in September 2008, Dr. Suzanne Bartlett conducted a final overall exam and found what she thought was a nodule on her thyroid. After requesting a second opinion and receiving a like diagnosis from Dr. Lisa Warne, Christa underwent tests that revealed fluid in the nodule along with a solid mass. “Dr. Bartlett is well known for her thorough examinations and I’m relieved that this was discovered. She and Dr. Warne are exceptional physicians.” |

Dr. Warne completed Christa’s nodule biopsy in October 2008 and subsequently recommended a physician in Iowa City, IA for remaining treatment. Her physician in Iowa City, Dr. Gerald Funk, was very surprised to learn that her OB-GYN discovered the lump and reassured Christa that she had a fantastic doctor. He commented that most OB-GYN’s were not thorough enough to discover a lump in the neck. Dr. Funk performed Christa’s thyroid surgery in December 2008, from which she has made a full recovery. “Without Dr. Bartlett making the initial discovery, it’s difficult to assess where I would be right now.”
Christa is exceptionally sensitive when it comes to her health. At age 15, physicians found a cancerous tumor in her throat. After 28 sessions of radiation, the pear shaped tumor in her neck is all but gone.
“Waverly Health Center is an exceptional hospital with a wonderful recovery facility in Tendrils Rooftop Garden. We should be proud to have access to Dr. Bartlett, Dr. Warne, and Dr. Ann Bell. These physicians demonstrate a sense of humility like I’ve never seen. They’re extremely confident in their work, but know their limits. They know steps to take and are confident in their decisions. Even though I only see Dr. Bartlett once a year, it’s as if I truly know her and have that special connection. This special connection is one of the many reasons I choose to provide annual gift support to Waverly Health Center Foundation.”

| | After discovering a small bump on his neck several weeks earlier, that’s exactly what Brent Matthias thought he would do.
|
Brent made an appointment to visit with his family physician, Dr. Clay Dahlquist. His goal was to visit Dr. Dahlquist and be back to work later that morning. After a careful examination, Dr. Dahlquist referred Brent to Waverly Health Center physician, Dr. Kerrie Bossard, for a second opinion.
Brent was surprised to learn that the “bump” was a life threatening situation and he needed immediate attention. “Dr. Bossard and her team made me comfortable and explained everything thoroughly. |

They made me feel at ease.” In the end, everything turned out just fine for Brent. He had several lasting impressions, however.
“We have a terrific health care facility right in my own backyard. The Waverly area is so fortunate to have such a high level of customer service and state-of-the-art facilities right here. The icing on the cake for me was the extraordinary customer service. The nursing staff really did care about my comfort and experience. That’s why I want to give back. This is my way of saying thank you.”
Brent purchased a life insurance policy and made Waverly Health Center Foundation the owner and beneficiary of that policy. Brent receives a tax deduction on the premium payments for the policy that the hospital would benefit from at his estate.
“I’m giving this gift to the people I trust with my life. This is to ensure that others can experience the same comfort in the future.” Do you have a special Waverly Health Center story? Click here to share your experience.
