May 8 - Diabetes Support Group
Waverly Health Center (WHC) will host a Diabetes Support Group on Tuesday, May 8. The event will take place from 9 to 10 a.m. in Tendrils Rooftop Garden on the WHC campus.
The topic will be “Quick and Easy Diabetic Cooking Tips.”
This program is part of the ongoing diabetes education outreach program offered by WHC. It is free and open to the public.

May 9 - Books are Fun Auxiliary Book Fair
The Waverly Health Center (WHC) Auxiliary is hosting a book fair featuring “Books are Fun” on Wednesday, May 9, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The fair will be in the Green Entrance Lobby. The public is invited to take advantage of this special book sale.
Start thinking of summer with a book on gardening or find a new grilling cookbook. This would be a perfect time to find just the right gift for that May graduate or June bride. Books and gifts are marked up to 70% off suggested retail prices.
Money raised will help fund Auxiliary projects. Past projects have helped finance the work of WHC and granted scholarships to people studying for a health care career. On April 26, the Auxiliary awarded $1,500 to six local students and staff thanks to the proceeds from past book fairs and from sales in the Gift Garden.
May 12 - Parkinson's Disease Caregiver and Support Group
Waverly Health Center (WHC) will host a monthly Parkinson’s Disease Caregiver and Support Group on Saturday, May 12. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to noon in the Carstensen-Gruben Room at WHC.
Please plan to attend if you or someone close to you is affected by Parkinson’s disease.
This event is free and open to all. Please park in the Orange Lot and enter through the Orange Entrance.

May 15 - Speakers Series: Hysterectomy - Then and Now
Waverly Health Center (WHC) will offer their monthly Speakers Series on Tuesday, May 15. The event will take place from 7 to 8 p.m. in Tendrils Rooftop Garden on the WHC campus.
Drs. Shannon Lau and Michele Martins, WHC Women’s Clinic, will present “Hysterectomy: Then and Now.” Learn about the history of hysterectomies and current surgical approaches, such as abdominal, laparoscopic and robotic.
This event is free and open to all. Please park in the Red Lot and enter through the Tendrils Rooftop Garden event entrance, located south of the Center Pharmacy drive-up.

BLS Healthcare Provider CPR
This American Heart Association class is intended for medically trained professionals requiring a healthcare provider BLS card. Class includes adult, child, infant and two person CPR, obstructed airway, use of barrier devices and use of the AED. Written and skills exam required. Participants will receive a 2 year completion card upon successful completion of the skills and written exams.

Breastfeeding Class
Waverly Health Center (WHC) is offers a breastfeeding class once every 6 weeks on a Tuesday, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Carstensen-Gruben Room on the WHC campus. Participants should park in the Orange parking lot and enter through the Orange entrance.
Certified Breastfeeding educators will review basic principles and what to expect when breastfeeding. Significant others are encouraged to attend.
The class is $10 and may be paid in advance at WHC’s registration desk or paid at the beginning of class. To register for the next scheduled session or to learn more, call the Birthing Center at (319) 352-4953.
Diabetes Self-Management Training - Group Class
This class requires a physician referral. It includes four educational group sessions that are offered over a single month and one hour of individual instruction.
The goal of this class is to assist people with type 2 diabetes to improve glucose control by learning self-management skills and risk reduction behaviors.
This class includes all 10 core content areas mandated by the American Diabetes Association for a recognized program and by the Iowa Department of Public Health for a certified program.

Freedom from Smoking Program
Waverly Health Center (WHC) will offer the American Lung Association's Freedom from Smoking program. The seven-week 'quit smoking' program will begin
Monday, January 9 and will end Monday, February 20
. The program will be held weekly from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. in the Carstensen-Gruben Room at WHC.
The program helps each participant create a step-by-step plan to overcome their tobacco addiction. The program approaches the challenges of quitting with a sensitive, supportive style and is based on the latest research on addiction and behavior change.
Some of the topics covered include:
Avoiding weight gain
Building a new self-image
Coping strategies
Quit smoking medications
Stress management
Studies show that people who complete the program are six times more likely to be smoke free one year later than those who try to quit on their own.
The program will be conducted by Brian Pins, WHC Community Health Specialist. Mr. Pins is trained and certified as a facilitator through the American Lung Association.
There is a $25 fee per person to cover course materials. There is a strict limit of 12 participants. Pre-registration is required at (319) 483-1361.
Heartsaver CPR & AED
Heartsaver CPR AED is a classroom, video-based, instructor-led course that teaches CPR and AED use, as well as how to relieve choking on an adult, child, and infant. Participants will receive a 2 year completion card from the American Heart Association upon successful completion of the skills.

Heartsaver CPR & AED Review
This American Heart Association class is designed for a person who needs to renew his/her current CPR certification. Participants must present a current CPR card to participate in the review class. The Heartsaver CPR & AED training includes skills for the adult, child, and infant. Participants will receive a 2 year completion card upon successful completion of the skills.

Heartsaver First Aid Training
Heartsaver First Aid is a classroom, video-based, instructor-led course that teaches students critical skills to respond to and manage an emergency in the first few minutes until emergency medical services (EMS) arrives. Students learn skills such as how to treat bleeding, sprains, broken bones, shock and other first aid emergencies. Participants will receive a 2 year completion card upon successful completion of the class.

Senior Health Insurance Information Program
WHC has partnered for the past five years with the State of Iowa to sponsor the Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) for the Bremer County area. The SHIIP program now has seven trained area volunteers who provide free-of-charge, one-on-one counseling and information to individuals with questions about Medicare, Medicare supplement insurance, long term care insurance and claim filings.
WHC SHIIP counselors are available to see anyone needing assistance with:
Medicare eligibility and enrollment
Medicare Part A & Part B benefit coverage and limitations
Medicare supplement insurance plans
Medicare Advantage plans
Long-term care insurance plans
Medicaid covered services and eligibility
Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage
