March 16 - Health Screening at the Waverly Senior Center
Waverly Health Center (WHC) will offer a Community Health Screen on Tuesday,
March 16, from 7:30 to 9 a.m.
at the Waverly Senior Center, 506 East Bremer Avenue. No appointments are necessary. Results will be mailed to participants.
Testing procedures available for minimal fees are as follows:
Health Screen
, $15, includes a diabetes screen, kidney function screen, liver enzymes and lipid profile.
Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA)
, $10, early screening test for prostate cancer.
Health Screen participants should fast for 12 hours prior to the testing and avoid caffeine products. Individuals who are fasting may have sips of water and take medications on normal schedule.
Prostate cancer can often be found early by testing the amount of Prostate-Specific Antigen in a man’s blood. The PSA is one component in screening for prostate cancer; additional testing should be completed by primary care physicians. The American Cancer Society believes that health care professionals should offer the test to patients starting at age 50. Men should have yearly prostate cancer screening. Men at high risk, such as African Americans and men who have a first-degree relative diagnosed with prostate cancer at an early age, should begin testing at age 45.
The fee structure covers only the costs of the test processing. Free blood pressure checks will be conducted by staff from WHC’s Home & Community Health and free blood glucose tests will be conducted by staff from WHC’s ADA Recognized Diabetes Education Program.
Breakfast will be available for a donation after the screening. For more information about the screening, call the Senior Center at (319) 352-5678.
