The Journey... Nursing Excellence at WHC
Implementation of a Nursing Excellence Initiative in any hospital requires an organization to be dedicated to progressive, integrative and quality care. Waverly Health Center prides itself on its rapidly growing Nursing Excellence Initiative that started in 2007. |
|

 |
The mission of the Nursing Excellence Initiative at WHC is to “provide the highest quality, patient-centered professional nursing care based on strong commitments to autonomy, technology and evidence-based practice in a collaborative environment.” And through this, Waverly Health Center’s ultimate goal is to be identified as a Magnet® Recognized hospital in 2011.
To achieve Magnet Recognition, WHC must demonstrate a high level of nursing structure, processes and outcomes. Sources of evidence are required for each of the five model components which include the following: Empirical Outcomes; Transformational Leadership; Structural Empowerment; Exemplary Professional Practice; and, New Knowledge and Innovations.
Nursing Excellence at Waverly Health Center consists of one guiding Steering Committee, complimented by four nursing councils. Each council has a unique role in the achievement of Nursing Excellence throughout WHC:
- Nursing Leadership Council: This council consists of all nurse managers at Waverly Health Center and helps to support the other three nursing councils.
- Nursing Practice Council: This council establishes and maintains a system to develop, review, recommend approval, implement and educate about nursing practice and patient care standards, policies and procedures.
- Nursing Professional Development Council: This council assesses, develops, implements and evaluates innovative professional development strategies.
- Nursing Quality Council: This council is responsible for collaborating with peers and other departments as appropriate to investigate problems and concerns and recommend appropriate action for performance improvement activities.

| The Magnet Recognition Program® was developed by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to recognize health care organizations that provide nursing excellence. The program also provides a vehicle for disseminating successful nursing practices and strategies. The Magnet Recognition Program provides consumers with the ultimate benchmark to measure the quality of care that they can expect to receive. Waverly Health Center’s nurses are working hard to earn this recognition. |
