 Patient-Centered Care

Waverly Health Center is committed to making a difference you can feel. We are a designated Planetree Patient-Centered Hospital. As a designated hospital, we provide patient-centered care in a healing environment. All of our staff and volunteers are working to implement a holistic approach to patient care in a more home-like setting. In addition to the warm, welcoming decor of the Centennial Pavilion, we offer a variety of services and amenities designed to meet your personal needs.

Services:

Activity Cart - A variety of activities and games are available for patients and visitors. Contact your nurse for more information.

Aromatherapy - WHC offers aromatherapy through trained staff on the inpatient floor, as well as the birthing center. Scents available are lavendar, peppermint, nausea relief synergy, revitalize synergy and rebalance synergy. Each individual scent has its own unique effect on a person’s mood, ability to rest and overall comfort.

Art Cart - Inpatients may select artwork for their room from a selection of traditional and contemporary art.

Care Partner - The Care Partner program is a way to involve a family member or close friend as a member of your health care team. This program is designed to enhance your health care experience by allowing your loved one to learn about and participate in your recovery. A Care Partner is an individual selected by you to participate in your care in a manner determined by you and your Care Partner. Areas of involvement may include:
  • Communication with your health care team
  • Emotional support
  • Patient and family education
  • Spiritual needs
  • Physical assistance

  • Community Advisory Council — The purpose of the community advisory council is to engage community members in the goals and projects of the health center. Individuals interested in becoming a member of the council may call (319) 483-4075.

Community Health Resource Library — The Community Health Resource Library is available for use by patients, visitors and community members 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. It is located on the 3rd floor of the Centennial Pavilion. The library is the home of a variety of health resources including user-friendly medical books, health magazines and journals, educational pamphlets and on-line resources. By filling out a membership form, materials can be checked out for two weeks at a time.

Family Kitchen — In order to make your stay as comfortable as possible, a Family Kitchen is available for your family to either prepare or store foods and drinks for themselves or for you, the patient. If the food is being prepared for a patient, the family should check with nursing staff for any special dietary restrictions. All food should be clearly labeled with a patient’s name and the date it was put in the kitchen.

Healing Environment — All private patient rooms, relaxing lounges and elements of nature built into the design of Waverly Health Center’s Centennial Pavilion create a comfortable healing environment.

Massage Therapy — For some patients, having a massage while in the hospital can be very comforting. If you would like to experience a massage, please know that the service is complimentary. Your nurse or health care provider may order one for you.

Mental Health & Grief Counseling - Waverly Health Center’s Licensed Independent Social Worker and Certified Grief Counselor provides counseling services upon patient request or physician referral to individuals who could benefit from mental health intervention and education. In circumstances that warrant grief counseling, individual counseling and programs/workshops are available to assist patients with grief issues and related needs.

Music Therapy and Relaxation Music — Waverly Health Center’s music therapist visits patients to promote relaxation and healing through music. If you are interested in a music therapy visit, ask your nurse. If you are in the mood for some soothing music, we have relaxation music available to play in your room.

Open Medical Records and Patient Communication Notes — One of the most valuable learning resources available during your hospital stay, is your own medical record. Waverly Health Center encourages patients to read their own medical records. In addition, we offer you an opportunity to utilize Patient Communication Notes to communicate with our medical team.

Patient Ambassadors — Volunteers visit inpatients on weekdays to provide information regarding WHC services. They are also available to read, help open mail and provide other services to patients.

Patient Gift Bags — Complimentary toiletry and personal items are provided for each inpatient upon arrival. These items have been selected to make each patient’s stay more comfortable.

Personal Health Information Books — We encourage everyone to keep their own record of their health care services. This book is designed to help you keep track of your health and wellness throughout your lifetime.

Room Service — Room service provides the opportunity to order meals when it is most convenient for you. You will be given a menu that matches you current diet order. You may order at any time by calling *4663. The tray will be delivered within 30 to 45 minutes unless you request a specific delivery time. Nutrition services and nursing staff are able to provide assistance with ordering meals.

Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) — SHIIP can help you find answers to the important questions you have on Medicare, Medicare supplement insurance, long-term care insurance and other health insurance issues. SHIIP is a free and confidential service available at Waverly Health Center. You may call to set-up an appointment at 483-1300.

Spiritual Support — Waverly Health Center recognizes your right to the spiritual support of your choosing. Several services are available to help accommodate your needs. The Prayer Team originated with the Waverly Health Center Spiritual Care Committee. Through the prayer hotline (483-4880 from outside WHC and 4880 inside WHC) prayer requests are taken for patients and staff. The prayer hotline is checked twice daily, seven days a week with the requests sent out to the Prayer Team. Some members of the Prayer Team are available to pray with patients and staff one-on-one as requested. If you need assistance notifying the spiritual support person of your choice, please contact your nurse. A meditation room is available on the 3rd floor of the Centennial Pavilion.

Tendrils Rooftop Garden and Community Arts Pavilion — Patients and visitors are encouraged to use WHC’s rooftop garden as an area to relax and enjoy a bit of nature. The rooftop garden is accessible by taking elevator C to the 4th floor.

Treat Trolley — Each weekday, the treat trolley visits the green entrance lobby from 2:30 - 3:15 p.m and the Centennial Pavilion nurses’ station from 3:15 - 4 p.m. A variety of snack options are available.

Visitors — Patients may have visitors 24 hours per day. However, if an isolation sign is posted at the entrance to a patient room, please check with the nurses’ station before entering.

Volunteer Baking — During your stay you may be visited by one of our Volunteer Bakers. They use the Family Kitchen to prepare fresh baked goods for patients, families and visitors and make their rounds in the afternoons and early evenings with cookies, muffins and other treats.
