Echocardiogram
An echocardiogram is an ultrasound of the heart to check for the following:
  • Heart size
  • Pumping strength
  • Heart muscle damage
  • Heart valve problems
  • Structural abnormalities
  • Blood clots
  • How is it done? You will lie down on your side or back. A technician will put special gel on a probe and move it over your chest area. Your heart's movements will then be seen on a video screen.
There is no preparation for the exam and there are no side effects. The test may take up to one hour.

    Common Terms Used
Regurgitation - blood leaking back into a heart chamber when the valve is closed.
Stenosis - narrowing of the heart valve.
Ejection Fraction (EF) - pumping strength of your heart.

    Carotid Doppler
A carotid doppler is an ultrasound of the carotid arteries which are located in the neck and supply blood to the brain; we will check for the following:
  • Plaque build-up
  • Blood clots
  • Stenosis

    How is it done?
You will lie down in a bed on your back. A technician will put special gel on a probe and move it along the sides of your neck.
There is no preparation for the exam and there are no side effects. The test may take up to one hour.

    Common Terms Used
Stenosis - narrowing of the blood vessel.

    Arterial Study
An arterial study is a study performed to determine if you have poor circulation to your lower extremities.

How is it done? A technician will put special gel on a probe and press on different areas of your legs to obtain a signal from your artery. Blood pressure cuffs will be placed on arms and legs to take your blood pressures. The technician may need to have you walk in order to recreate the symptoms you have experienced in your legs.
There is no preparation for the exam and there are no side effects. The test will take at least one hour.

    Common Terms Used
PVD/PAD - narrowing of the vessels that supply blood to your lower extremities.
