WHC Receives American Diabetes Association Recognition

Monica Boyer | July 17th, 2017

The Waverly Health Center (WHC) Diabetes Self-Management Education Program has recently been awarded continued recognition from the American Diabetes Association (ADA). This program offers high-quality education services that are a critical piece of effective diabetes treatment.

The ADA education recognition effort is a voluntary process which assures that approved education programs have met the national standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education Programs. Programs that achieve recognition status have a staff of expert health professionals who can provide complete information about diabetes management. It teaches self-care skills that will promote better management of their diabetes treatment regimen, such as diabetes disease process, nutrition, physical activity, medications, blood glucose monitoring, goal setting, problem-solving and psychological adjustment.

Through the support of the health care team and increased knowledge and awareness of diabetes, the patient can assume a major part of the responsibility for their diabetes management. Unnecessary hospital admissions and some of the acute and chronic complications of diabetes may be prevented through self-management education.

According to the ADA, in the U.S:

  • 1 million people have diabetes
  • An estimated 21 million people have been diagnosed
  • 1 million people are not aware that they have the disease
  • Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death
