Men’s Health Month

ARamthun | June 21st, 2019

June is all about the guys! Since 1994, the month of June has been declared Men’s Health Month. Here are some tips for helping men stay on top of their health this year:

  • Prevention is important: In general, men see their healthcare provider much less than women. Many health conditions are preventable and prevention starts with visiting a doctor for a physical. Knowing numbers for things like blood pressure, cholesterol and weight can help catch possibly dangerous health issues before they become a problem. Not sure where to start? Take a look at these age based health screening schedules for men: Ages 18 to 39, Ages 40 to 64, 65 and over.
  • Get moving: The health benefits of physical activity have been proven time and time again. Many people get hung up on trying to make exercise too formal, drawn out or difficult and often lose their motivation. Just get moving the way you enjoy most – doing yard work, cleaning the car, building something or taking a walk are all activities that count as movement!
  • Eat for fuel: Each stage of life has its own nutritional needs. It’s important to make healthy choices with food so your body is fueled with the energy it needs to keep up with life’s demands. Check out this article from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics on healthy food habits for men.
  • Mental health matters: Men are less likely to seek help for things like depression, anxiety, substance abuse and stressful events. Mental health is just as important as physical health. These screening tools can help you learn about what you need to support your mental well-being.
  • Be safe in the sun: Men spend more time outdoors and are less likely to wear sunscreen than women . Long sleeved shirts, pants and wide brimmed hats work best to protect skin from the sun. Make sure to apply sunscreen to all other parts of the body that are not covered by a hat or clothing.
