Nashua Clinic is welcoming a new doctor. Dr. Colin DeFord has joined physician assistant Tara Hensley to provide health care for people in Nashua and surrounding communities.
Dr. DeFord received his doctor of osteopathy degree from Des Moines University and completed his family medicine residency at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. He previously served as a family doctor in the United States Air Force at the Malmstrom Air Force Base in Great Falls, Montana. In 2015, his clinic was named the best patient-centered medical home clinic out of the 75 in the Air Force.
Dr. DeFord grew up in Perry, Iowa, and looks forward to returning to the state. He’s the third of nine children and grew up working in his father’s clothing store and auto, and also working for a local pig farmer to help pay for college.
He commented, “I joined the Air Force in order to gain experiences I would be unlikely to gain in any other setting, to serve my country, and to avoid going into debt for medical school. I think the Air Force has helped me appreciate even more the freedoms we enjoy and those who sacrifice to protect them. It has given me a unique opportunity to work with, to serve and to get to know people from many diverse backgrounds and cultures, and because of this, it has helped me see the similarities we all share as people.”
Dr. DeFord became a doctor because he thought it would be a good way to care for and serve others. He especially enjoys developing relationships and trust with people. This allows him to better understand his patient’s needs when a time of uncertainty or crisis arises.
Dr. DeFord commented, “I am excited to be returning to my roots in Iowa, and I am grateful to Waverly Health Center for providing me an opportunity to serve Nashua and the surrounding areas. I am especially looking forward to getting to know the people and developing long-term relationships while working to improve the health of the community for years to come.”
In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his wife Becky and their four daughters Alne (5), Shaylee (3), London (1) and Blakely (newborn). In addition to work and his family, he also likes to play golf and anything related to football.
