Frank’s Unexpected Trip from the Yard to the ED

June 26, 2025

It started as a normal Wednesday for Frank Haaland of Waverly, who was out mowing his yard when a low-hanging tree limb caught him by surprise. His finger was crushed between the limb and the steering wheel of his mower. True to his determined nature, Frank wrapped it up and finished the job—only heading to the Waverly Health Center (WHC) Walk-In Clinic after some convincing from his wife.

At the clinic, the staff quickly assessed Frank and sent him to X-ray. Because it was an open finger fracture, he was then directed to the Emergency Department (ED) for a more thorough assessment. The ED team cleaned and stitched up the injury and sent Frank home with instructions to follow up with an orthopedic specialist.

What makes Frank’s story even more impressive? He’s one of our dedicated hospital volunteers—and he showed up for his volunteer shift the very next day, bandaged finger and all!

Thanks for your commitment and resilience, Frank. We’re glad you’re part of our hospital family!
