Lucas Ramige, an active 40-year-old from Shell Rock, was enjoying his weekend when he felt a sharp pain in his knee. Concerned about the discomfort and swelling that followed, he decided to visit the Waverly Health Center (WHC) Walk-In Clinic the next day.
At the clinic, after a quick evaluation, the provider recommended an X-ray. The X-ray revealed some unusual signs of stress in the knee joint. To further investigate the cause of the pain, Lucas made an appointment with Cedar Valley Medical Specialists located at WHC.
The orthopedic team of Stephanie Smith, ARNP and Dr. Robert Bartelt conducted a thorough physical examination. Based on the symptoms, they suspected a tear in the meniscus — the cartilage that helps cushion the knee. To confirm the diagnosis, the team ordered an MRI. The MRI results confirmed a torn meniscus, a common but painful injury for active individuals.
To manage the pain and inflammation, they recommended a cortisone injection. The injection offered immediate relief, allowing Lucas to move with less discomfort. Following the procedure, Lucas was prescribed a course of physical therapy at Taylor Physical Therapy, also located within WHC, to strengthen the muscles around his knee and promote healing.
Thanks to the comprehensive care provided at WHC, Lucas was able to have all his treatments in one convenient location. The combination of the cortisone injection and physical therapy set him on the path to recovery. Within a few weeks, Lucas noticed significant improvements in his knee's mobility and strength. By diligently following his therapy plan, provided by Brady Meyer, PT, DPT, Taylor Physical Therapy, he was able to return to work and his favorite outdoor activities with confidence, thankful for the seamless care he received every step of the way.
“I really wanted to get back to hunting and climbing my deer stand. With the help from WHC, CVMS and Taylor Physical Therapy I was able to do just that,” Lucas added.
