Tracy Wilson, a long-time volunteer at Waverly Health Center (WHC), has been recognized as the winner of the 2024 Volunteer of the Year Award. Wilson, a Janesville resident, has been volunteering at WHC since 2016.

Volunteers are available in many capacities to help patients at WHC. They greet patients at each entrance, assist in wayfinding throughout the hospital, and provide companionship, to name a few. Wilson received the award for an act she displayed as a Patient Ambassador.

Wilson’s nominator wrote, “I recently witnessed Tracy sit with a patient during their end-of-life process. The patient did not have any family or friends to be with them during that time. Tracy provided amazing companionship by singing, playing music and providing comfort.”

Patient Ambassadors can be viewed as an additional source of comfort during a patient’s stay. As a Patient Ambassador, Wilson visits with patients to explain and offer additional services during their stay, such as pet visitation or a prayer team. She also checks patients’ room temperature, waters any flowers or plants in the room, and provides a listening ear when needed.

“Tracy’s time spent with this patient was truly one of the most compassionate acts I have ever witnessed,” the nominator continued. “We are very blessed to have Tracy as one of our amazing volunteers at WHC!”

In addition to her role as a Patient Ambassador, Wilson provides pet visitations with certified therapy animals and is a clerk in the Gift Garden. She has surpassed 1,000 hours of volunteer time in her eight years with WHC.

Nominated by WHC staff and members of the community, the Volunteer of the Year must be a current volunteer who has provided service at WHC for at least one year.
