Winter weather can be dangerous, especially when it includes ice. Just ask Fred Waldstein of Waverly. During January’s ice storm, he had a major fall, breaking four ribs and puncturing a lung.
Fred commented, “I fell outside and ended up laying there a while before anyone found me. Once notified, the ambulance team from Waverly Health Center came and worked to keep me as comfortable as possible and explained what they were doing. I really felt like I was being helped by people who were true professionals.”
He was transported to the emergency room at the hospital. “One of the nurses caring for me in the ED was Mary Ventullo. She’s a neighbor of mine so I knew I was in good hands. The team kept me informed along the way.”
Because of the pain from his broken ribs and the care needed for his lung, Fred stayed at the hospital for several days. “My room was very comfortable and the food was very good. The staff was very courteous and professional. I was able to have fun with the nurses while they were taking care of me – it made the day go faster. I appreciated that my friends and family could come and go as we wanted.”
While Fred was in the hospital, he needed physical therapy to help him get better so he could go home. “I needed to use a crutch to walk to help take pressure off my broken ribs. My physical therapist was Leah Thier who I’ve known for years. She encouraged me to do more and more as I was able.”
“Dr. Ivey from the General Surgery Clinic was great to work with and the hospitalist was very attentive. The hospital team used the communication board in my room to help keep track of the next steps so I could be ready to go home. Everyone was very good about suggesting how my wife Edie and I could access various services for home care.”
“Overall, my experience at Waverly Health Center was great. It is very comforting to know we have access to great care right in Waverly,” Fred concluded.
