Who has time for a painful foot problem? Certainly not Laura McDermott of New Hampton. Laura is a busy teacher in Charles City. And most importantly, one of her daughters was soon getting married in Boston.
In the fall of 2015, Laura had a lot of pain in her foot due to a large corn that was pushing on and growing into the bone. “My foot hurt so bad I could only wear flip flops and if I bumped it, the pain was unbearable,” Laura commented.
“I knew I wanted to go to a smaller hospital where I wasn’t just a number. I started looking for a podiatrist with a good reputation and found it in Dr. Greg Lantz. When I learned he did surgery in Waverly, it fit my needs perfectly.”
Laura had the procedure done at WHC’s outpatient surgery center in December. “Winter wasn’t the ideal time to be on crutches, but my daughter’s wedding was coming up in July and I wanted to be ready to wear heels and dance,” she said.
“I felt very comfortable at the hospital from start to finish. The room I was in was quiet and comfortable. Also the staff was very informative and helpful. I was even surprised with a massage. At first I thought my niece who works at the hospital arranged it and then I found out that it is just a wonderful service the hospital provides for patients. Overall, it really didn’t feel like I was in a hospital.”
Laura’s husband Patrick came with her for the surgery. She commented that she brought her own comic relief with her, referring to her husband, but the staff also did a great job of putting her at ease. “The physical therapist that showed me how to use my crutches was very sweet and patient with me. She was also very helpful and kind.”
Surgery went well and by following the instructions Dr. Lantz gave her, Laura’s foot healed quickly. “I love shoes and now can wear whatever kind I want. I wore high heels for my daughter’s wedding and danced the night away.”
She concluded, “I would definitely come back to Waverly Health Center again!”
