Sandi Wedemeier

If you’ve ever had vertigo, you know how it impacts all aspects of your life. Sandi Wedemeier experienced it first hand and desperately wanted it to stop. Her doctor gave her some medicine, but it didn’t help the vertigo and made her feel very tired.

At that time, Sandi was going to Waverly Health Center for physical therapy. She told her therapist Ryan Chizek that she might not be able to do some of her exercises because she was dizzy. “Ryan said, I can help with your dizziness if you’d like. He quickly worked with my doctor to get a referral. Ryan did a great job explaining how the inner ear works and step-by-step how he was going to treat my vertigo.”

“Sandi had benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV),” Ryan shared. “It is an issue with the inner ear and causes the dizziness which many times leads to nausea. I started out by assessing Sandi’s symptoms so I knew which techniques would help her the most.”

“BPPV is very treatable,” Ryan continued. “We have several physical therapists at the health center that are trained to treat it. The cause of BPPV is usually unknown and the symptoms can come on suddenly. It may start with a slightly dizzy sense when bending over, looking up or even when you roll over in bed.”

Sandi commented, “After Ryan completed the maneuvers, I sat up on the table. Immediately my nausea was gone. He said it may take 24 hours to have complete relief. When I woke in the morning, I was no longer dizzy when I was upright. I did still have some dizziness when I was lying down.”

At her next appointment, Ryan assessed her vertigo and once again treated it. “It was like magic,” Sandi said. “Within one week of seeing Ryan for the dizziness, all of my symptoms were gone. He taught me how to do the technique at home in case I needed it.”

“Before I experienced vertigo, I had no idea how much it affects a person. I couldn’t imagine staying on the medicine because I felt horrible. There’s no reason to suffer for weeks or even days when there is such a simple treatment available. Being able to feel normal so quickly was just amazing.”

“Ryan did such a good job explaining the process to me. I now feel empowered because I know what I can do to help mitigate the issue until I can get to physical therapy. I absolutely recommend Ryan and the other physical therapists at Waverly Health Center,” Sandi stated.
